The Team

PathGroup's experienced team is led by Ben Davis, MD, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. He is a pathologist with extensive experience in the leadership and management of large, integrated regional pathology practices. PathGroup's Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Russell Tonnies, has been with PathGroup since its founding in 1997. Russ has extensive public company financial and accounting experience and has worked in health care for more than 25 years.  Louis Suttle, Executive Vice President, Corporate Administration and Compliance, joined PathGroup in 1998. He has more than 25 years of leadership and management skills with large clinical and anatomic laboratories. Chuck Locke, Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, Business Development, has been with the company since 2009.  He served for many years with Hospital Corporation of America in business development and acquisitions and operational roles for physician groups.  Richard Halstead joined PathGroup this year as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.  He brings extensive experience in sales and marketing for a global medical devices company and global pharmaceutical company.  John Finney is PathGroup's Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Since 1982, John has worked on developing software and computer systems for laboratory and medical management.  John Lynch, Senior Vice President of Business Office Services, joined PathGroup in 1997 with over 33 years of progressive management experience in insurance and healthcare industries.


Ben Davis, M.D. Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of PathGroup, Inc. in Nashville, Tennessee, since its founding in 1996.  Dr. Davis has also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Associated Pathologists during this period.  Prior to joining Associated Pathologists in 1986, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Vanderbilt University Medical Center and School of Medicine after completing a Residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Vanderbilt in 1981.  Dr. Davis received his Undergraduate Degree with a B.A. in Molecular Biology at Vanderbilt University in 1973 and his M.D. at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in 1977.  Other notable experiences include serving as Chairman of the HCA Healthcare Network Institutional Review Board (1989-2008) and as Group Leader of the Experimental Pathology Unit, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Molecular Biology Branch, Bern Switzerland (1981-1983).
 
Russell Tonnies Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Tonnies joined the Company in August, 1997. From 1992 until 1997, Mr. Tonnies served as Vice President and Treasurer of OrNda Healthcorp, which was the third largest for-profit hospital company in the country with approximately $3 billion in revenue prior to its acquisition by Tenet Healthcare. Mr. Tonnies negotiated and arranged over $2.1 billion of various types of high leverage financing including $1.4 billion of senior debt, $525 million of public subordinated debt, and $155 million of off-balance sheet REIT financing. Mr. Tonnies also negotiated various hospital acquisitions and supervised OrNda's treasury operations, risk management, construction, and investor relations. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Tonnies held the same title with Republic Health Corporation, the predecessor to OrNda, and from 1984 to 1989, he served as Director of Corporate Tax for the same company. Mr. Tonnies is a certified public accountant formerly with Ernst & Young, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
 
Louis Suttle Executive Vice President, Corporate Administration and Compliance, Mr. Suttle joined the Company in February, 1998. He was formerly Chief Executive Officer of Columbia/HCA Nashville Regional Laboratory Services from 1995 to 1998. Prior to his affiliation with Columbia/HCA, he was a member of the management team of Allied Clinical Laboratories, Inc. from 1983 through 1994 with his last responsibility as Senior Vice President of Operations of Northern Operations. He was a member of the senior management team responsible for taking Allied Public in July 1989. Allied Clinical was sold in 1994 and became part of Laboratory Corporation of America.
 
Chuck Locke Sr. Vice President-Chief Operating Officer & Business Development, Mr. Locke is responsible for all Laboratory & Marketplace Operations of PathGroup.  In addition, he also oversees the merger & acquisition and new hospital contract growth initiatives of the Company which also includes the operational planning and implementation activities to assure the successful integration of the new business growth. Locke's Operational, Business Development, and Financial experience in the healthcare industry has been honed through a unique blend of anatomic and clinical laboratory, physician practice acquisition & management, and hospital management experience. Prior to PathGroup, he was Operations Vice President for HCA Physicians Services, where he led the acquisition, employment and operations of over 60 physician practices and over 200 physicians.. In addition, he has extensive clinical and anatomic laboratory industry experience with companies such as Allied Clinical Labs, Dynacare and MDS. Prior to his healthcare experience, he was a CPA with Deloitte Haskins & Sells. Locke has a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration-Accounting from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
 
Richard Halstead is responsible for PathGroup’s sales and marketing efforts. He has more than 19 years of leadership experience in Global Pharmaceutical and Global Medical Device companies. Prior to joining PathGroup, he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing at BSN Medical’s United States Affiliate. During his time with BSN he also served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Phlebology Foundation. Mr. Halstead spent 11 years with Sanofi-Aventis where as Senior National Director of Sales he built a 500 person US Sales force in the Specialty Pharmaceutical Division. Beginning his career with Abbott Laboratories as a Specialty Hospital Representative he went on to hold positions in sales training, marketing and sales management during his six year tenure. Richard holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Charleston and completed two years of advanced Graduate studies in Biology at Marshall University.
 
John Finney Director of Information Systems and Chief Information Officer, Mr. Finney has an extensive background in computer and information systems. From 1986 through 1997, Mr. Finney was President of Aurora Software, which developed software for anatomic pathology and cytopathology systems, a church information and management system, a clinical laboratory interpretive system, a radiology reporting system, and multiple system interfaces. From 1995 to 1997, he also served as Vice president for Software Development of Medical Information Management Systems, Inc., where he was responsible for developing a multi-facility electronic patient record system based on client-server architecture for a national market. Mr. Finney's other experience includes 5 years with the U.S. Army, as an Engineer Company Commander and an Instructor of Mathematics, Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Belmont University in Nashville, and Vice President and General Manager of System Development for Health Development, Inc. for 4 years, where his projects included development of a laboratory management system, and nutritional analysis.
 
John Lynch, Jr. Senior Vice President Business Office Services, Mr. Lynch joined PathGroup in March 1997. He has over 33 years of progressive management experience in the insurance and healthcare industries. Prior to joining PathGroup, Mr. Lynch spent more than 21 years in the insurance industry primarily with American General Corporation, directing and managing a variety of areas including Customer Service, Billing, Policy Holder Benefits, and Company Consolidations. Mr. Lynch has an extensive background in Pathology Billing, Collections and Managed Care Contracts and has been instrumental in reducing Accounts Receivable Days outstanding and improving collection percentages. He received his Fellow Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation in 1985 and became a certified Models-Netics instructor for Main Event Management Corporation in 2007.
